Phoenix, Houston Musician–Carrie Johnson

When I do a blog on a new Featured Artist, I like to spend time in their music, listen and get the feel of each one, who they seem to be by my own instincts.

Doing that with featured singer-songwriter Carrie Johnson, I could see in her pictures and hear in her voice, in all of her songs played, both heart and soul and a determination to really show who she is, a very strong young woman, an artist that has her own story to tell. Of where she came from, what her heart desires and how much effort she really puts into her talent.

I was amazed at Carrie’s vocal range. Singing the bluesy low notes in “I Wanna Be Loved” with some high, incredible notes, backed by some strong beat rhythms in the background. To me, she reminds me of one of my favorite R&B artists, Alicia Keys. As her bio says, she is definitely her own woman. Carrie, artist name BFlossie, is strong and determined and I love that the most about her. Don’t you ever lose that!

Carrie Johnson

Her Bio:

“I was born in Phoenix, but raised in Houston. Started learning music in the 5th grade with violin. Since then, I have taught myself to play piano, guitar, ukulele and turntables. Upon receiving a Mac computer, which had Garageband, while in college at the University of North Texas, I began recording and writing my music. A couple of my songs have been considered for independent films, as well as artists for Sony. I plan to have an EP out before the end of the year.

My music can be found on, and

Blog—-The Journey of Life

I almost never blog on my own personal feelings. Not that anyone else could ever see. Its great therapy to journal your thoughts every day, whether it’s a good day or a trying time, those are the wonders of life.

What started out as a vision, a pulling of the heart, a determination to do my part in any small minute way to encourage others, to lift them up, to have them Pay it Forward, has been so awesome and magical to watch. Indie musicians and artists that I’ve had the pleasure to meet and blog about on this site, some of their goals are coming true and they are working hard with much progress. Surely not because of my belief in them, that was just an addition…..encouragement from this end saying “I KNOW you can do it! You have to know that, too”, but because most importantly that the desire to make their goals remains inside them every breathing moment of the day. That pushes them. They start to see that they had it in them all the time, they just needed to find it, let go of the fear, not putting it off, stepping out and doing it. I applaud that and always will. It inspires me.

But, for those that get discouraged along the way (and that happens. It is part of the journey) and need to “be still”, not get caught up in the world’s hurry and constant changing, this is my message to you.

I get there, too. We are all human and need to listen to what our hearts are saying. If they say things such as “I don’t know if I’ll make this” or “My mind needs to be cleared from the noise”, “I need to do what’s best for me”, that is totally okay.

If you are in that questionable place in life right now or have been there and know that feeling….don’t look at how far you have to go still, take a look back and see how far you’ve come.

Always remember the reason/s of why you started your journey and it will come back to you.

Denver Musician–Colin Patrick

Colin Patrick puts a smile on my face as well as many other of his listeners. He not only has his own unique style and talent, his personality does not hold him or his newly put together band, Lovelorn Regal, back at all. Colin is very straight forward and knows what he wants. And what I hear from Colin’s music is a desire to please not just the upbeat pop, acoustic fans but also a more subtle, smooth Gavin DeGraw-like fans. He is a very versatile and driven artist.

More on Colin Patrick:

Colin Patrick

COLIN PATRICK currently resides in Denver, CO. He learned to play guitar and write songs whilst recovering from a soccer injury he suffered in college. Patrick had dreams of playing professional soccer one day, but it was not meant to be, his love of music and songwriting took precedence, and he began to write and record.
An un-trained guitarist and vocalist, Patrick crafts his sound with hypnotic dexterity and warm familiarity—his mix of pop, folk, blues and psychedeliaappeals to a wide range of listeners, and has helped to gain him national recognition for his songwriting. Seemingly so, he too is catching the eyes and ears of local musicians alike—and they are listening—Colin Patrick won the honor of being Colorado’s solo-artist of the year in December 2012. Today he puts most of his energy into writing as front man for newly formed LOVELORN REGAL.
With the increasing national buzz around the Denver music scene, LOVELORN REGAL hopes to keep it on the map with their self-released debut album, LAST CALL. Patrick wrote and produced the album alongside friends and session musicians/engineers Andrew Serr and Chris Carter. All works were complete at Serr Studio, in Parker CO.
LAST CALL now in stores everywhere. On iTunes and Spotify February, 2015.

Business of Music——Blog

Recently I had the thrill of going to Nashville, Tennessee “Music City” to see all the things I had always heard about as an A&R scout years back and from working with musicians one-on-one. It was a quick one; the first day was spent in learning the business of being a songwriter with Broadcast Music, Inc. and the last part, going to and seeing for myself all the great music places in history and respecting every part of that.

Music has been a huge part of my life since I was a kid. I was born into a musical family with it around me all the time. I loved it and thought everyone’s home was just like our’s. I can remember going to the local City music theater at an early age of 5 and watching my Dad performing in the “Music Man”. I danced around the place as if I were in it, too. A seed planted in my heart back then that has never left.Nashville

I have been an A&R scout for Arista and J Records/MLS from 2005-2010, a marketing representative intern for Atlantic and now with BMI as a marketing representative. In my spare time, that is me, music. That is the way #Payitforward2015 started in January of this year and has grown. I have seen the many hours songwriters put into their day, their goals, their dreams. And I have also seen that the music industry is probably one of the most competitive industries there are around. It is difficult to get into and get the royalties for their hard work and many keep a “day job” for sometimes years, before they get that much awaited chance to get “in the door” and start working with professionals that help hone their creative gift of talent.

Music touches us all. It reaches out in times of celebration and times of hardship and no matter what age, gender or genre…it gives us Hope. I know we listen to a song on the radio or through our tech gadgets now and we never really think about the business side of the music.

The business side of the music is a foremost first for any musician that wants to share their talent with many others. Especially in our economic times when music is ever-changing any way and many start up a new music platform or business group or label only to have it fall through in sales months later. Business planning, even if you are an indie singer-songwriter with no manager, no label and love playing concerts at local venues, all need to know the legalities of copyrights on up to publishing to collaborations to booking gigs at venues, play time on radio, live streaming and music downloads.

Every time, a songwriter needs to keep track (if they are on their own) of how many times and where their songs are played. This way they can get paid for their songs they write and are copyrighted.

There are many questions and many answers to specifics and I will use BMI’s information for all to follow from “Why License?” to publishing and co-publishing to royalties.

Start here: Why License?

And to BMI’s Live. Which is a really beneficial way for touring musicians to get paid their share of royalties and it can even be done with Mobile Apps.

There are many music platforms out there today, new and some that have been around for years. BMI has been around since 1939 as a PRO (Performing Rights Organization) and you don’t need a publishing company to get paid your royalties.

In addition: In my own opinion, after watching artists, bands grow or unfortunately fail to reach their goal is because of the important connection between artist and fans.  THANK YOUR FANS! Even if it means setting up a system that works for you and your music schedule to where you let them know that they are very appreciated. It means the world to them, it really does. I can (almost) guarantee that an artists’ fan base will grow much quicker by contacting them on a steady basis, whether it’s a newsletter, a blog subscription and/or special little perks that make their day.

If you show them your appreciation (they helped you get to where you are), they will be a fan for life and word of mouth is the best marketing out there from one fan to many others.

Next up:

1) More Featured Artists and Bands

2) Live reviews with video and pictures of some of the concerts I have personally been to this far including Tori Kelly, Denver Day of Rock, half of Rob Thomas’ and more from last summer here in Denver including Rod Stewart and Carlos Santana.

Denver Musician–Joshua Grey

Yet another very talented indie musician from Denver, Colorado..Joshua Grey. I trust my gut instincts when listening to an artist or musicians in a band. The one that says “this artist has that drive and passion, along with great talent, that will take them far in their goals”. Joshua’s unique vocals stuck out to me as just that and am excited for him to continue to pursue his goals. He is very dedicated and has a story to tell in his music.

More on Joshua:

From humble beginnings, singer/songwriter Joshua Grey has emerged as one of Denver’s most recognizable young artists. With his debut single “Sanctified” he has captured the attention of a city in desperate need for heart filled and passionate music. Joshua’s ‘Storytelling’ style of writing comes down to one simple cause “my goal isn’t to write a catchy hook with no substance I want people to not only hear what I’ve gone through, I want them to feel it”. With nothing to lose Joshua Grey plans to take colorful Colorado by storm in the summer of 2015

Texas Musician—Kenosis Dean

As always, I am looking for creative art people globally wanting to share their passion to the world. It is not an easy thing to do during these economic times and so this website (and larger one connected) is a free platform to bring those “up front” and do my best in showcasing their talent.

I recently met Texas born musician, Kenosis Dean on Twitter and was taken away by his talent. And not only that but his sincerity, his heart, his passion. No matter what age, gender, location or genre, if it touches me I am sure that others will be touched, as well.

Kenosis is a proud husband and father and Christian artist. He is real and down to earth and here is some more about him:

Kendall Dean started singing in Churches in Texas at a young age. He fully understands that his gifts and talents are not his own, and are nothing more than opportunities to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Kendall has had the chance to open for major artists in the Christian music industry. Musical influences include  LeCrae, Mercy Me, Tenth Ave North, Disciples, Sidewalk Prophets and many more. It is Kendall’s personal mission to awake lukewarm Christians, he says he’s spent a large amount of time being lukewarm himself and knows the dangers that await. Kendall is married to Amy Dean, he is a full time college minister at the Muskogee Church of Christ and also a traveling speaker and musician. His set list includes; “All about love”, “Here’s my life”, “Water”, “Never leave you”, “Great in me”, “Home”, and “Light for You”.

” It is in our struggles that we label ourself as different but it is at the cross that we see we are all the same”.~~ Kendall Dean

And Denver kicked off Memorial Day 2015 with Denver Day of Rock held by Amp the Cause:

Amp the Cause
Amp the Cause, formerly Concerts For Kids, is a Denver-based non-profit organization that raises funds for, and awareness of, local children’s charities. Christie and Walter Isenberg created Amp the Cause in 2004 with the vision of enriching the lives of children by supporting efforts in the areas of healthcare and education. Since its inception, Amp the Cause has changed significantly and developed into an organization that is not only known for its annual fundraising events, but is admired for its year-round involvement in the community. In just eleven years, Amp the Cause has distributed over $4.2 million in monetary and in-kind donations to beneficiaries.

It was a rainy day yesterday, May 23, 2015 by the Tabor Tower close to Skyline Park, but that didn’t stop many coming out for this great cause, including myself jumping through the sometimes deep puddles of water and wet feet. An awesome lineup of musicians and artists, some local and some not:

Personally, I love to go to as many Denver music fests as possible in the summer. There are many every year and just bring a rain poncho..just in case.

Denver Artist—-Steve Lyman

Denver, Colorado musician Steve Lyman amazes me. He has written over 65 songs and recorded them. That, in and of its self, shows how much he is dedicated and loves what he does. Colorado is known for its many musicians. There is something about being in this beautiful state that draws in musicians and artists, to feel close to nature and brings out the natural creativity that many have.

Update on site

Two sites,  two together

“Two is better than one”, “One is thee loneliest…” all kinds of two quotes. But yes, 2015payitforward has officially joined with

with the hopes of bringing a lot more media to the sites including:

  • Featured Musicians (still)
  • Featured Artists
  • Featured Writers

and a newer powerful presence in Colorado and that is film making. Videography, photographers, etc. have always added life to music. The term most used in 2015 is “project” and there are many.

The many concerts, big and small, all over but mainly focusing on Colorado’s beautiful venues and many local and international musicians coming this summer.

Myself, personally, I hibernate in the winters and rarely ever stay home in the summer time. Concerts and being outdoors is what helps me breathe.

We are always looking for indie musicians to help spotlight and truly believe in Pay it Forward which this (now two) site was based upon.

Helping one another in a world that is going by so fast that we want to share every minute of it with you.

Filming of concerts, photos of travel, joining with other Pay it Forward people in the hopes that ripples of kindness will continue. Technology is awesome but I want to experience that in person and share and look forward to hearing all of your journeys, as well.

Stay tuned!!

* Coming up. Will be at Denver Day of Rock May 23rd, 2015. It is a great cause and group of people helping others.

Denver Day of Rock’s Website

“Stay hungry, stay foolish and challenge yourself”

The site was just launched and already have seen the ripple effect of people wanting more. More kindness, more commitment, more willing to take risks and chances.

I am the type of person that stands on the side, applauding and encouraging all artists to “Go for it! Take a chance, step out of that box. What do you have to lose?” and loving watching them shine as they continue to go in their passion.

Don’t ever give up. That is not an option. Let the world see how beautiful you are and let them hear your stories in your talent.

Pay it Forward project journey—Blog

For years, I have always had a heart for indie musicians. Even after scouting for major labels, I continued to do it as a non-paying passion. I work a regular job during the day (which I love and is really busy) and had some extra time on my hands to “step out of my comfort zone” which was basically Facebook and before that, Myspace.

My parents gave me the biggest gift in being an artist myself. Not that I can sing like they did or do artwork like my sister, Aunt and my Mom. But was gifted with the love of it and helping indie artists reach their goals. So, basically I felt pulled to go out into cyberspace and different territories to find what was out there.

It was not the easiest journey. Long nights, a few skeptic critics thinking that I was doing this for myself, but no matter what, I kept at it in my spare time.  I wanted to show those that were following, what kind of music scene Denver and all of Colorado, has. The musicians, the artists, the culture, the venues–Red Rocks Amphitheatre?– there is nothing more beautiful than that. A huge history of famous musicians coming out of Colorado or whom have chosen to make Colorado their home. And newer music comes to Denver with many projects happening this year with the filming industry, as well. Snowman Films is amazing and great photographers like DustinJackPhotography being one of my favorites.

Also, now that I am getting older and seeing many people struggle from the nation’s poor economy slide, watching others helping others brought me to tears at times. The beauty of Paying it Forward is that it can be a compliment, a smile, a “how are you today?” or more than that in donations for those in need. That was the key ingredient for me in looking at the world a little less angry and more compassionate. In this process, I saw that life is so short and no matter how badly it gets for us, there is always someone else out there fighting for and enjoying their life for many different reasons. Battle with cancer, loved ones passing away, loss of jobs, homes and dignity. But yet they rise again.

Someone said “In a year from now, do you really think this will matter?” and my answer, to some, if not just one..kindness always is remembered. I remember those whom have helped me in rough times so this is my pay back by Paying Forward. The best thing is, I’m just one. Many Pay it Forward people are out there and thank God for that.

I will update this site weekly and add calendar of events, BandsinTown concerts and live videos, pictures for this summer’s concerts.

It has been a pleasure!

Ryan Chrys and the Rough Cuts——Kickstarter Project

Colorado’s Ryan Chrys and the Rough cuts started a kickstarter project last year in September. Their gig van broke down and they needed another one to get to their concerts.

Our beloved old van is dead, we desperately need a newer one so we can continue to share our music with you and the North West region.

Through their fans and great hearts they had 34 backers pledged $12,165 to help bring this project to life.

Chris Daniel and the Kings and Freddi Henchi—-Kickstarter Project

Denver’s Chris Daniel and The Kings and long time musician friend, Freddi Henchi wanted to launch a project earlier this year. The project was this:

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP! Ever since I first heard Freddi “Love” Gowdy back in the 1970s with Freddi Henchi I’ve wanted to work with him. We got the first chance in 2010 when I came back to Colorado during my treatment in Houston for leukemia to play a benefit for a hospital with Chris Daniels & The Kings Fred came to help me sing because I was too weak to get through the whole gig. We’ve been friends for 40 years and I think he has a voice that rivals Ray Charles or Marvin Gaye and he is one of the most soulful performers I’ve ever known. In 2011 after meeting up at the Colorado Music Hall of Fame we decided to start singing together. Fred inducted me into the CMHOF in 2013 and I hope I get the chance to do that for him soon. Ever since the Kings recorded the Freddi Henchi classic “I Like Your Shoes” in 1990 with Al Kooper we really wanted to make a record together. And now we have. It’s called “FUNKY TO THE BONE” and we really need YOUR help getting the CDs and LPs pressed and to radio and stores across the US and Europe!

They posted it up on Kickstarter and needed funds to help from their many fans. And they needed to meet fund cost of doing this project by a certain time limit.

Chris Daniels and Freddi Henchi

and they did.

With the help of Kickstarter and their many fans!

I even donated to it. It was a life “special moments” goal come true.

Los Angeles Musician—-Molly Moore

Los Angeles, CA musician

Molly Moore is a genuine chameleon who writes songs from deep within. In her recently recorded songs available on Soundcloud like “Natural Disaster”,“Hallucinating”, and “Break”, the singer/songwriter moves seamlessly from lighter folk-influenced sounds through to darker and sometimes edgy pop that comes from a variety of influences. Her songs beckon and feed off of a large audience of diverse listeners.

“Molly’s current influences include newcomers Sam Smith and Banks. Molly has even been compared to highly regarded 90’s singers like Suzanne Vega, Joan Osborne and Lisa Loeb.”

As you may expect, developing these styles comes from an early age. Molly hails from the Bronx & grew up in Westchester, New York.
Fast forward to adulthood and Molly has moved to Los Angeles, initially as a writer. But response was swift and her songs “Ready For Love” and “Hollow”were picked up and transformed into uncharacteristic EDM successes by Canadian Felix Cartal and veteran Dutch duo Dubvision. She signed with manager Ric Aliberte  and has worked with a variety of producers, mainly with Steve Dresser (signed to songwriter/producer Busbee & BMG) to help hone her sound. Molly has been working closely with singer/songwriter Brandyn Burnette (Sony ATV, with songs recorded internationally by Jake Miller, Auryn, Hedley, and others), with whom she traveled to Sweden and Norway in May 2014 on a songwriting junket for BMG.

Amazing talent and happy to share Molly with new fans and her supportive fan base already.

Please follow her on her Twitter Page for more information

Spoken Word Writers—-Tyler Ward

Tyler Ward is a musician that is from Colorado and has grown so much in his talent. I became a fan years ago and smile when seeing him soar.

In this video, called “Spoken Word”, Tyler shows another side of his talent. With Red Rocks Amphitheatre in the background, this video is very profound and heart warming.

Writer—-Eric Shoars

Eric Shoars, Ph.D is a brilliant author. Not only does he captivate his readers by his descriptive writing style, he also adds humor to it.

He is an author of many books and also of blogs to share. His book “Triumph” is a must read for anyone wanting to discover triumphs in their lives.

My online review of “Triumph”

From the very beginning Eric Shoars’ book “Triumph: Winning Big in Life With Patience, Persistence, and Perseverance” the reader can sense the strong importance on how to step out of the box and face your fears and challenges. With many appropriate quotes, Eric illustrates that we as humans all have fears; we all tend to stay in the same place and not push forward. He aides in helping us find those barriers in our lives. My favorite quote in the book is “the shampoo life; wash, rinse and repeat” meaning that that is not life, it is existing. He challenges you to look at what took you off course. And the very importance of having a positive “I can do this” attitude. The book is very powerful in making those discoveries in your life and changing them. This, only we can do for ourselves. I love this quote the most: “Knowledge unshared is worthless. Build people up” while managing your own energy. I recommend it to all people no matter what age or situation you are in.

You can purchase Eric Shoars’ books on Amazon

Denver Musician—Katey Laurel

Katey is one of the most ambitious musicians I know from Denver. She is constantly challenging herself and raising the bar by enrolling in top musician contests, collaborating with other top musicians and markets herself very well. And her talent just grabs the listener into her music.

The artistic roots of singer-songwriter Katey Laurel are both deep and diverse. Born to free-spirited, nature-loving parents in the early 1980s, she spent the first years of her life traveling coast-to-coast in a Volkswagen bus. When her family eventually made a lifestyle change from the freewheeling hippie life to settling on a ranch in rural Colorado, the more isolated environment left Katey’s young imagination craving input.  She turned to creative pursuits to fill the void. A lover of horses from an early age, she began drawing and painting her equine muses, and also began studying piano.

Katey’s newest project is her “Periscope–The Remix Project” which you can purchase here on her website.

One of my favorites of Katey’s is her “Hurricane” single

Boston Musician—My Silent Bravery

I had the pleasure of working with My Silent Bravery and Matthew Wade years ago when scouting for labels. Matthew has a “Pay it Forward” concept with his music now after overcoming a personal injury. His unique sound and determination is what keeps My Silent Bravery going and doing so well all this time.

Billboard Magazine states, “My Silent Bravery plays like a major label signing, from its production savvy, eloquent lyrics, authoritative imaging, polished web site, a dedicated Northeast U.S. fan following, merchandising, and most important, a chockablock collection of winning songs. My Silent Bravery is destined to make major noise.”

At this time of writing, My Silent Bravery has a new album out “Diamond From Coal” and can be purchased on

London Musician—Lynne Jackaman

Somewhere between 2005-2006, I found soulful lead vocalist Lynne Jackaman on You tube. At the time, I was an A&R for some major labels and that was my job. To find “young, singer-songwriter, indie” artists. I loved her and her band mates, Saint Jude, right away and contacted her. Since then, we keep in contact no matter where she is or I am.

About Lynne:

Lynne Jackaman:

Maximum British Rock and Soul!

Saint Jude are a London-based rock and soul band fronted by vocalist Lynne Jackaman. Saint Jude are easily one of the rock industry’s most hotly-tipped acts. Recently nominated Best New Band at the 2011 Classic Rock magazine Roll of Honour, the ferociously talented six-piece are fresh from a whirlwind summer circuit that included the UK’s Guilfest, Cornbury, Sonisphere, and High Voltage festivals where they positively brought the house down on the main stage. Spearheaded by the jaw-dropping vocal talents of soul diva Lynne Jackaman, whose breathtaking range and delivery has invited comparisons to everyone from Janis Joplin to Tina Turner to Aretha Franklin, her voice is truly once in a generation, and her collaborations with artists as diverse as Ray Lamontagne, Snoop Dogg, and Frankie Miller speak volumes about her abilities. Backed up by a Hammond B-fuelled tight-as-a-drum five-piece that conjure The Faces one moment and the Black Crowes or the Allman Brothers the next, Saint Jude are easily one of the UK’s hottest talents.

I totally agree. She is still making great music, still in London and we still connect. She has an upcoming single to be released “You Can’t Take Back

Denver Artist–Tommy Nahulu

If you live in Colorado,Hawaii or beyond, Tommy Nahulu is not an unfamiliar name.

He is an icon in Denver art. He painted the first mural of Johnny Cash on a venue’s outside wall in down town Denver. It was a landmark for years. He is very admired by his peers, family and friends.

Nahulu has been a fixture on the Denver rock scene since the ’70s. He’s written reviews and taken pictures, booked festivals and started music websites, managed Liz Clark and road managed Nina Storey. He’s worked with the Colorado Music Association, the People’s Fair, the AIDS Walk, the Westword Music Showcase, RockOnColorado and LMNOP (Local Music Network of Patrons). Nahulu is also a muralist, perhaps best known for the Johnny Cash portrait on the side of Bender’s Tavern on East 13th Avenue in Capitol Hill.  —Richard Baca

You can see more of Tommy Nahulu’s Art on his Facebook page

Denver Musician—–Jason Vigil

Anyone who has enjoyed Colorado’s music scene for years, knows the name Jason Vigil. He has been in Colorado doing what he loves, making music and recently has been working on new projects with a trio band. I know that when I heard his music play, I would smile right away because I knew who it was.

More on Jason and his Quote at the bottom, I love:

• A Colorado native,  Jason Vigil is a singer/songwriter that has played the Denver region and toured nationally for the past 8 yrs.

• Nominated Denver’s best singer/songwriter in 2008 by Westword Magazine.

“Two years after releasing his second CD, “Sometimes Always”, Jason decided to take a step back from his original project and refocus his direction in life and music.  He succeeded in his goal of earning a living through playing music, by performing 90s cover songs in a few different bands, (The JV3, The Power Strangers, The Brown Stripes and solo-acoustically as, Jason Vigil) gaining even more experience as a performer and honing his skills as a musician, vocalist and songwriter.

As of Late, Jason has begun recording the songs he’s written over the past couple years with plans to release them under his new solo project, Jason Aaron.  He says,

“Sometimes you take what you have lived through, good and bad, what you’ve learned, and put that into the things you create.  The best is when you make something positive and it affects someone in a good way, for any amount of time.  I would love the music I create to do that for someone. ”
